Vincent Romano Mr. Wells EDUC 1300 5 March 2017 My Career Paper I have chosen to research the career of Supply Chain Management because I have experience in the field and a desire to make it my lifelong career. I am currently employed in this field and would enjoy learning every aspect it has to offer. Typical job duties for a supply chain manager include understanding client's needs and how to meet them, proposing improvements to management and to customers and maintaining business relationships with suppliers and clients (Occupational Outlook Handbook). Educational requirements for a supply chain manager include a bachelor's degree in business administration and in very few cases, an associate's degree (Occupational Outlook Handbook). Success as a supply chain manager requires knowledge, skills and abilities. The manager must have knowledge of transportation, customer and personal service, production and processing and administration and management (O*NET Online). Skills required include active listening, speaking, reading comprehension, coordination and monitoring (CareerOneStop). The career also requires the ability of problem sensitivity, oral comprehension, oral expression, written comprehension and written expression (O*NET Online). The salary range for a supply chain manager is $45,000 - $115,000 (Occupational Outlook Handbook). The job outlook for the near future is below average, with a projection to grow 2% from 2014 to 2024 (Occupational Outlook Handbook). Employment growth will be driven by the need for logistics in the transportation of goods in a global economy (Occupational Outlook Handbook). Every job has its advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of being a supply chain manager for me would be that I can make a decent salary doing something that I know and love. Another advantage for me would be the daily challenges the job will detail. On the other hand, a disadvantage of being a supply chain manager is the many responsibilities and minimal room for error daily. Another disadvantage is that this career will require a lot of my time which means early mornings and late nights at the job site. The career of a supply chain manager requires certain intelligences. When I took the multiple intelligence inventory, my strongest intelligences were bodily/kinesthetic, naturalist and interpersonal. When I clicked on the interpersonal intelligence, one of the careers suggested was a leader. The career of a supply chain manager also matches several of my interests. When I took the Holland interest inventory, my strongest interest groups were enterprising and social. Although the career of a supply chain manager was not specifically mentioned, the careers that were suggested were similar. I have always been interested in using my skills toward something I enjoy. I also like the idea of being a leader. When I completed the Do What You Are inventory and the in-class self-inventory, my personality type was ISTJ. The career of supply chain management was not one of the ones listed for my personality. I have several personality traits that are compatible with the career of a supply chain manager. I am naturally driven by new challenges and obstacles. In addition, I love the feeling of overseeing the distribution of something getting from point A to point B. I am also detail-oriented, careful, and I can lead and work well with other people. The career of supply chain manager also matches my values. My 5 most important values were working as part of a team, working with other people, working for the most money possible, work that is stable and a high-status job. In general, a supply chain manager works mainly at one location every day indoors with a minimum amount of travel. It is a high-status job and involves lots of contact with people. It also involves research, so there is an element of challenge and exploration involved. These elements match my values very well. There are several steps to pursue to get into this career. I will need to take speech and several math courses along with basic, foundation classes. After that, I will transfer to the University of Houston and get a degree in Business Administration.
